The order comes two years after NGT issued directions to the aviation regulator on the matter.
Dumping excreta from a flying airplane will now attract a fine of Rs 50,000 for airlines. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed all airline operators plying within India and those operating to and from India to abide by the order. The directive was passed in compliance with an order of the National Green tribunal (NGT).

The order comes two years after NGT issued directions to the aviation regulator on the matter.

DGCA has, however, filed a review petition with the NGT saying it is impossible for flying aircraft to dump excreta.

Till the final outcome of its review petition, the DGCA has directed all air operators “not to release any waste while landing or takeoff at or near the airports…the directions are interim in nature and finality of the same shall depend upon final adjudication of the matter.” The fine of Rs 50,000 per default is a penal provision in terms of environmental compensation.

The interim order passed by the DGCA is applicable to all domestic airlines, foreign carriers operating to and from India; state governments, public sector undertakings and private air operators.

In 2016, a resident of Vasant Kunj had filed a petition in the NGT, alleging that airplanes dump waste on his house, which was close to the airport. In December 2016, NGT issued directions to the DGCA for implementation on the petition.

Earlier this year residents of Fazilpur Badli, a village near Gurugram, too complained of airplanes dropping poop near their village.
