Passenger Flora Lu claims she was told by airport staff her flight had been delayed after a crew member was run over.

Posting on Twitter, she wrote: 'We don't really know what happened. Cabin crew informed us that we have ran over a person while being taxied to the runway.

'According to them this person was trapped under the wheel. At the moment we are still onboard waiting for further information.'

It is thought up to around 200 passengers were stuck on the Rossiya Airlines aircraft, which was held on the tarmac at the airport for two hours.

Passengers are now reported to have been been given overnight accommodation in London so that checks can be made to see whether the plane was damaged by the incident.

Some passengers initially said the emergency services tried  to 'lift the plane' after it had 'ran over' the person on take-off.

Later reports said that an injured person was rushed to hospital in an air ambulance.

The worker's condition has not been clarified by airport or airline officials.

A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport said: 'We can confirm that an incident took place on the airfield at 5.10pm where a Dnata employee was unfortunately injured and the emergency services were required to attend.'

A spokesman for Rossiya Airlines has been contacted for comment.
