AIRPORT FIRE: Plane bursts into flames at Frankfurt Airport, Germany

A Star Alliance plane was engulfed by flames at Frankfurt Airport when the truck towing the aircraft caught fire during a push-back.

10 people have been treated with various injuries – according to a Frankfurt Airport spokesman.

The blaze surrounded the Lufthansa Airbus A340's cockpit while it was being moved near an airport terminal.

Fire crews raced to douse the inferno – which left the plane's exterior completely blackened.

Thick black smoke could be seen emerging from the aircraft as it remained stationary near the terminal.

BLAZE: Smoke can we seen coming from the plane

"Aeroplanes or facilities of the airport were not affected by the fire," he said.

There were no passengers or staff aboard the aircraft when the blaze broke out.

Aviation news site JACDEC claimed the plane suffered heat damage – but was only blackened during the fire.

"The amount of aircraft damage was considered minor, if any," it tweeted.

A Lufthansa spokesman said: “This morning, a Lufthansa LEOS push-back vehicle caught fire on the apron of Frankfurt airport during repositioning of an aircraft.

“Heavy smoke emerged. The fire has been completely extinguished.

“There were no passengers or crew on board during repositioning.

“Ten people are under medical treatment as a precautionary measure to be checked. There are no serious injuries.”
